What Chess Coaches Say

Sergey Averchenko
FIDE Master, FIDE Arbiter
I work with children from the age of 5 — both those whose parents aim for competitive results and those who learn chess for general development. Coaching since 1992.
I was pleasantly surprised to see a new resource designed for the very youngest learners. I might add an option for students who complete the course to register on a playing platform and take part in special tournaments for little ones (at this age, playing should take up to 85% of all lesson time).
- The material is structured competently and logically; the format is ideal.
- The exercises match the level and format of the material.
Interactive learning is the future. At first a child will certainly need a parent’s help to go through the course, but by the end they will be able to cope with the exercises on their own. Students can start from the age of 5. The animation and characters are all fine; a little more graphics could be added. As a first introduction to the game, the course is quite good. […]

- The course does a brilliant job of teaching chess from scratch up to the level where a child knows all the rules and how the pieces move perfectly.
- The structure of the material looks completely right: theory is immediately followed by practice, so everything sinks in at once.
- Sometimes there is even more practice than needed, but repetition is the mother of learning. After solving so many exercises, the child’s knowledge of chess basics will be flawless.
- I think you could add either light background music or a separate sound signal for moves — with no music at all, a child may get bored and find it unusual; they need at least a little background entertainment.
- Most likely an adult will still need to be present at the start to explain things, but later the child will figure everything out and manage on their own.
