What Chess Coaches Say

Your child plays a chess quest and learns chess

Just 2–5 minutes at a time

Between school and after-school activities, or while dinner is cooking. Your child can stop anytime and pick up right where they left off.

On their own, no parental help needed

Your child takes on the challenges alone, gets hints and sees the result of every move. Parents don’t need to know chess.

Every stage, a new skill

Your child masters chess step by step and earns rewards, and you can see their progress.

The basics for a fraction of the cost of a coach

Each stage of the quest covers what usually takes 3–5 lessons with a coach, so 36–60 lessons for the whole course. Private chess tutors on Wyzant charge from about $20 an hour, and a private lesson at the Chicago Chess Center costs $40. For 36–60 lessons, that’s $720–2,400. The full course is $44.50.

What if my child…

…gets bored?

Every stage is a new challenge!

Chess adventures, fairy-tale characters and rewards for every success keep kids interested.

…loses focus quickly?

No time to get tired!

Explanations of 20–30 seconds are followed right away by short game challenges.

…wants to quit after the first difficulty?

Try again!

Hints, repeated explanations and the chance to replay help kids get past the hard parts.

What awaits your child after each challenge?

A new animated reward! Fairy-tale characters come to life and talk, and new discoveries lie ahead.

Frequently asked questions

What if my child doesn’t like the chess quest?
Start with the two free stages. Your child will get to know the chessboard, the pieces and the game challenges, and you can see whether they’re interested before buying the full course.
What age can kids start?
We recommend starting at age 5. There is no upper age limit: the course also works for adults who want to learn chess from scratch.
My child has trouble focusing. Will they manage?
Even if your child finds it hard to stay focused for long, they can learn at their own pace. Each block takes just 2–5 minutes, and short explanations alternate with game challenges.
We don’t know how to play chess ourselves. Is that a problem?
Not at all! Every rule is explained out loud, and every move is checked automatically. Parents don’t need to know chess for their child to learn.
What if my child gets stuck on a task?
They can use a hint, see the correct solution and repeat the move. And if it doesn’t work the first time, they can simply try again.
After the course, will my child be able to play with friends or parents?
Yes. Your child will learn the rules needed for a real game of chess: how the pieces move, check, checkmate, castling and the other basics. Playing with confidence takes practice, and competing in tournaments takes further study of tactics and openings, plus experience playing against opponents.
Can the course replace lessons with a coach?
For getting to know chess and learning the rules, yes. Your child goes through 12 stages in a game format, independently and at their own pace. For further progress and tournament preparation, lessons with a coach will be helpful.
What if my child quits halfway through?
That’s fine. Progress is saved: your child can return to the quest at any time and pick up from the stage where they stopped. All their achievements and rewards stay with them.
How much time a day should my child practice?
There’s no strict schedule. Your child can do a few short blocks a day, 5–10 minutes in total, or complete several stages in a row, choosing whatever pace suits them.
Can my child use a tablet or phone?
Yes, but we recommend a computer or tablet. On a smartphone, the board and pieces look smaller, which makes practicing less comfortable.
